Now that the South African Civil Aviation Authority has fine-tuned the regulations governing the use of remotely-piloted aircraft (RPA), Oakhurst is proud to introduce Drone Insurance. After extensive research and consultation with drone experts, we have created a specialised product that can be tailored to meet your client’s individual needs. Our innovative product is supported by a team of experts who attend to all policy and claim queries and ensure quick turnaround times.
 
About Drone Insurance - We have 3 types of Insurance Cover:
 
Full Cover:
 
  • Comprehensive cover for damage, total loss, theft or hijacking;
  • We insure drones for an agreed value;
    • Minimum sum insured – R10 000 per drone;
    • Maximum sum insured – R2 000 000 per drone;
  • Drone accessories must be included in the agreed-upon value;
  • Cover for modified drones;
  • Cover for drones while in flight and on the ground;
  • Third-party liability cover for R2 500 000 or R5 000 000;
  • Worldwide cover (except in the United States of America, Canada and Japan).
 
Third-Party Liability:
 
  • Cover for any accidental damage or injury that a drone may cause to a third-party person or property (to the value of R2 500 000 or R5 000 000);
  • Cover for modified drones;
  • Cover for drones while in flight and on the ground;
  • Worldwide cover (except in the United States of America, Canada and Japan);
   
ATO (Authorised Training Organisation):
 
  • Comprehensive cover for training-facility drones against damage, total loss, theft or hijacking;
  • We insure training-facility drones for an agreed value;
    • Minimum sum insured – R10 000 per drone;
    • Maximum sum insured – R250 000 per drone;
  • Drone accessories must be included in the agree-upon value;
  • Cover for modified drones;
  • Cover for drones while in flight and on the ground;
  • Third-party liability cover for R2 500 000 or R5 000 000;
  • Worldwide cover (except in the United States of America, Canada and Japan).
   
Basic Excess:
 
  • R5 000 per claim for damage to the drone’s hull;
  • R5 000 per claim for theft or hijacking of drone;
  • 10% of claim for third-party liability (minimum of R25 000);
   
Policy Requirements as per Civil Aviation Act 2009 (Act Number 13 of 2009):
Personal Use:
  This applies to cover where there is no commercial outcome, interest or gain:
 
  • No Remotely-Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) pilot license is needed;
  • Permit required from local municipality to allow flight within the relevant area.
   
Business, Commercial and Corporate Use:
 
  • Remotely-Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) pilot license is not required;
  • Certificate of registration for each RPA;
  • Operations manual created by the individual operator detailing all flight operations and safety measures;
  • Business registration and compliance documents;
  • Certificate of Proficiency in Radiotelephony (for communications with manned aircraft and air traffic control);
  • Air Services License granting permission to operate RPA for commercial purposes;
  • Specific approval for drone filming operations near people, buildings, roads and controlled airspace (including flying within 10km of an aerodrome);
  • Licensed operators with an RPA Operator Certificate (ROC) and individual operations manual may get special permission to operate within 50m of people, buildings, roads, controlled airspace (near airports), flying at night and so on; separate permits may be required from local authorities where bylaws are in effect (for example, all South African national parks are no-fly areas for drones or any aircraft flying below 15 000 feet);
  • Operators must carry the following when operating drones:
    • Air radio for communicating with manned aircraft and air traffic control;
    • Fire extinguisher and first-aid kit;
    • RPAS pilot license, RPA operator certificate and operations manual.
